Understanding Asthma: Triggers, Symptoms & Long-Term Management

Asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory conditions affecting millions worldwide. It is characterised by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, causing recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing — particularly at night or in the early morning.

Managing asthma effectively begins with identifying your personal triggers. Common culprits include airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mould spores, and pet dander. Non-allergic triggers are equally important: cold or dry air, exercise, respiratory infections, tobacco smoke, air pollution, strong odours, and even emotional stress can provoke an episode.

Spirometry — the gold-standard lung function test — is essential at diagnosis and should be repeated at regular intervals to track your airway's response to treatment. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing can further quantify airway inflammation and guide steroid dosing decisions.

Inhaler technique is the single most common reason for poor asthma control, yet it is frequently overlooked. Studies show that up to 70% of patients use their inhalers incorrectly. A pulmonologist or respiratory nurse should review your technique at every visit, using a physical demonstration with a placebo device.

Environmental control measures form the third pillar of management. Encasing mattresses and pillows in allergen-proof covers, maintaining indoor humidity below 50%, using HEPA air purifiers, and removing carpeting from bedrooms can significantly reduce allergen load and the frequency of exacerbations.

With the right personalised action plan — combining controller medications, rescue therapy, trigger avoidance, and regular specialist review — the vast majority of asthma patients achieve excellent control and lead fully active lives.
